China Luxury Market-Not Just a Bed of Rose

Every company on any industry is struggling on the economic meltdown, especially for luxury companies. When Europeans and North Americans tighten their belts, newly-emerging wealthy classes in China are desperately chasing for anything that will shows their affluence and status. However, it is predicted that China will become the one of the biggest luxury market in the future as its neighbor and archrival-Japan, but out of those optimistic hype, it is still a tough nut to crack.

Alcoholic beverages is always the precursor to a new market. Although almost every brewery in China adopts foreign formulas or technologies, luxury liquor producers still doubt with the prospect. Champagne house Taittinger said it could make high-end sparkling wine in China but the market was not ready for it yet, while Lamborghini said the country’s tradition of luxury chauffeurs, bigger than sports driving, made expansion there a challenge. The luxury watchmaker’s Chief Executive Jean-Marc Jacot said. Taittinger said there were many places in China where it could consider making high quality sparkling wine – champagne can only be made in the northern French region – but Chinese palates were not accustomed yet to the pricey tipple. “It is probably a bit early,” Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger said. “There is not a strong (high-end) wine culture there yet.”

Another concern is business culture diversity. Jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels, owned by Richemont, found it tough to get its brand message across, while watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier worried about finding the right partners. “The specific challenge about China is finding a Chinese company you can trust and who understands the luxury business,”

Counterfeits are always the top obstacles for luxury companies to succeed in China Market. Hermes, whose chic handbags are hand made in France, would consider making goods in China if it could find artisans to make original items, but said it suffered from counterfeiting there. “Our image is strongly damaged by counterfeits. That is why we are fighting it like hell,” CEO Patrick Thomas said. “When they (in China) see a counterfeit, they think it is genuine.”

Counterfeits cost luxury groups hundreds of millions of Euros in lost sales every year and imitations are becoming increasingly refined and sophisticated.” The challenge in China is being able to explain to 1.3 billion people what your brand is about,” said Van Cleef & Arpels Chief Executive Stanislas de Quercize.

While the number of high net worth individuals in China is set to continue to rise steadily, the bulk of the country’s population cannot afford up market Western brands. But luxury groups agree that China, where consumers are very brand-conscious, will soon become the industry’s No 1 market and this year will be one of the few emerging markets to enjoy growth. So it’s certainly a rose bed but you have to nurture it by heart.

Your Own Hermes Kelly

Find a new feature on the Hermes US web site, called Les Ailes d’Hermes, the wings of Hermes. The animated micro site allows you to discover and travel the world of Hermes. You learn about the origins of box calf, the complex coloring of their iconic scarves, you see a glove crafter work the smooth leather, there’s mini-games and much more. The part that transformed me back to being a 6 year old was I want it, I’ll have it feature. It allows you to pick between 8 different Kelly motifs, download it as a PDF, print it at home and assemble your own mini-Kelly. How fun. If it only wasn’t for me being entirely finger challenged when it comes to fine crafting. Paper is quite delicate, which I learned the hard way. On my first attempt I miserably failed to follow the primitive instructions, folding where I was supposed to cut and vice versa. Eventually, I got her done and the result is displayed above. Visiting Hermes in Venice

In Italy, Hermes Venice is beside Louis Vuitton. While my Hermes collection merely contains a handful of scarves, Twilly’s, and a beautiful bracelet, I am on the hunt for a Birkin. The Hermes store in Venice is quaint, but still packs a big punch. Downstairs are all of the scarves, bracelets, and small goods, while upstairs there was clothing and of course, glorious bags. A lovely SA showed me around and delighted my arm with a Blue Jean Hermes Lindy, which I had a really hard time passing up. The only reason I opted not for the Lindy was for the sheer fact that I am anxiously waiting for a Hermes Blue Jean Birkin with Palladium Hardware. Insert drool here. A handful of Kelly’s were spotted here and there which still made my heart skip a few beats. In the store front window, a breathtaking Hermes Kelly in Orange Swift tantalized every passerby eyes. Victoria loves the public eye. It is not as if Victoria tries to hide from the cameras, and really, her bright red dress was not toning it down at all. As she shopped on Rodeo Drive with pal Eva Longoria and son Romeo, the trio caused quite a stir. As they shopped in Versace, Dolce & Gabanna and Yves Saint Laurent, Victoria stayed true to her Hermes addiction and carried a Hermes Kelly Longue in Gold Swift leather. Her Hermes handbag collection seems endless; just as we spot her carrying one Birkin she pops out with a style we have never seen her with. The Kelly Longue was derived from the Hermes Kelly a couple seasons back. The bag is longer and thinner than the Kelly Pochette and rarer. Victoria’s Kelly Longue is made with Swift leather, but the Longue also is available in Box, Veau Doblis, Chevre Mysore, and Crocodile. Though, the exotic has only hit the runway and been seen on display, it is unsure if it will be sold. The price starts around $4,000. This handbag is a stunning classic, and while it is great for evening wear, it makes the perfect day clutch also. Victoria’s Hermes collection continues to take my breath away! Timeless Hermes Bags

In the economic recession, Hermes dose not offering anything on the runway that brought a new and wacky punch, but offering us a taste of refined style that they are known for in Fall 2008. Coats and jackets took precedence on the Paris runway, which were pulled together with oversized belts pulled tight at the waist. The color palette was monochromatic yet timeless. There was a sense of stability during the show, as the models gracefully made their way down the runway accessorized with knit caps and scarves. The handbags stayed true to Hermes, but added an urban chic touch with the reinterpreted Hermes Kelly worn as a messenger bag at the hip, named the Hermes Jypsiere. Many say Hermes played it safe, but it was more about being classic than safe to me. The Hermes Fall 2008 line is timeless, just as the brand itself.

The Most Expensive Handbag

Have you seen “most expensive handbag in the world” ? It is Hermes Diamond Crocodile Birkin. That LV junk is at most half the price of a bag that truly deserves some praise, the Hermes Diamond Crocodile Birkin. The Hermes Diamond Crocodile Birkin is what Maybach is to cars, Schloss Neuschwanstein is to castles, Monaco is to luxurious nightlife. Ultra luxe croc on a Hermes Birkin is enough to make you beg at a strange SA’s feet, but paired with 14 carats of pave diamonds on the signature Birkin lock and clasp would send me into a continuous groveling state. That sight would not be pretty. Recently Doyle New York auctioned off a Hermes Diamond Croc Birkin which sold for $64,800. That price is reasonable, compared to a ‘$140,000 one-of-a-kind pink crocodile Birkin bag with diamond hardware that was sold in one day’ when the Hermes Palm Beach Store opened in February 2007. While a Croc Birkin is one my dream list, the diamond encrusted croc Birkin seems a bit farfetched for me, but is still a masterpiece and the pinnacle of all handbags. To whoever keeps pushing that LV bag as the most expensive in the world, feast your eyes on a bag that makes the LV tag of $45k look like chump change next to $140k.
